I purchased a new iPod Classic recently, the 80gb
version and I was kind of disappointed with some of
the features. Of course, it was mostly the coverflow,
which listed albums artworks by artists, which,
especially in my case, as I am a big fan of movie
soundtracks, was kind of sad cuase I could not
actually use it. The number of artowrks was a few
times higher than in the iTunes, which was not only
confusing, but even slowed the iPod down.
Another bug concerned the videoplayback. As I have all
my videos (except podcasts) in the Movies subfolder of
the menu, I decided to remove the Videos folder from
the menu, and leave there just the Movies subfolder.
As it turned out, it was not the best decision,
because when I started playing a widescreen movie, the
letterbox was white! I quite a video geek, but I have
never seen something like that before on any other
device… The solution was quite simple, I just had to
put the Videos folder back to the main menu and it was
ok.
The last, kinda really disturbing bug was actual
harddrive. More specifically, when I was going through
my photos, the drive started to run every single time
I pushed the next button to go to the next picture. I
am not sure if it is just the case my iPod, but the
volume of the hdd noise is quite high, especially
audible in a quiet enviroment and when I am not
wearing my headphones, so just like the time I was
going through my pictures. I think it might have
something to do with the new whole metal case. Maybe
the plastic used to absorb more of the hardware noise,
I dont know.
Well, the point is, the new software update 1.0.2
fixed all of the three bugs I described here.
Coverflow orders the artwokrs by albums, actually, by
compilations. So be careful about that. I did not have
marked 1/3 of my albums as compilations and coverflow
created sort of two artwork list following each other.
First was a list of artworks of albums I did not have
marked as compilations and they were still ordered by
artists, though they showed just one single artwork
and not many of them like before. The list was
followed by a second one, where albums where marked
as compilations, so they were ordered properly by the
album name. This description might have been a little
confusing, but the point is that you need to have your
albums marked as compilations. Followingly, the update
fixed the other two bugs too. The video is now playing
just right, no white letterbox anymore, whether the
Videos menu is in the main one or not. And it also
somehow fixed the harddrive problem. The drive now
starts to run just every 6-7 pictures of the
slideshow. And about the hdd noise. In my opinion it
is normal, it is not like noisy, it is just audible
when in a quiet enviroment. I just did not notice on
my last iPod, but that was the 20gb 4th generation
ClickWheel, and it was plastic.
Basically, I can only recommend to go for the new
update, there is no thread like in the case of iPhone update 1.1.1.
delfor:
